There were 3 companies which were very exciting and are going to be very useful to many of the members of GettingThere.ie
The Abhaile Project is totally relevant and totally doable and will not only improve the quality of life but will almost self finance as provides the opportunity to earn some money.
This is a win win project.
The idea is that when, and when will happen, we become less mobile, we can turn the average 3 bedroomed house into a double apartment. The owner/ occupiers will live on the ground floor with a newly installed wet room, while the upstairs will become an apartment which can be let out to a single tenant or a couple. The plans have been drawn up, so these plans can be used and they estimate that the works can be carried out for a very reasonable 50,000 euro. The beauty of it is that if wanted, the house can easily be reconverted back into a 3 bed. So do the maths. Rent out the upstairs apartment for 1,000 euro a month and not only do you have a rental income that is tax free, but there are also people coming and going.
They have some very impressive people on board and will be doing 2 houses in Dublin in 2018.
The second company, which was the overall winner is headed by Peter Mangan and is a type of airbnb for older people. The Freebird club is specifically for the over 50s. Once the reasonable joining fee has been paid, members can put in where they would like to visit. Then they can contact other members from the Freebird club and arrange to stay for a reasonable amount. They can work out among themselves how much time they would like to spend with their hosts. Breakfast is included in the overnight price. If you do not want to travel, you can have people to stay with you. This allows people to access local knowledge and the local community.

The 3rd company is Mature Gurus. I am interested in this because I was going to include this in GettingThere. The idea is that retired business men mentor/advise startups or young people setting up businesses or indeed larger companies who are working on a specific project and require the expertise. Patrick Divilly works out of the Guinness Enterprise centre and while doing research realised that many retired business men miss the dynamic of the business world and the social interaction. The costs are only 50 euro for the enterprise and the Gurus give their experience and expertise free. It is obvious that many enterprises would jump at the chance of getting in a HR expert, or a tax accountant or a Sales Executive.
