Things to do

How we manage most things is changing rapidly and yet, our basic needs stay the same.

Retiring is a major transition. Retiring during the pandemic was often odd: To be part of the workforce one day and no longer, the next. Our routines changed and navigating this new way of doing things required a lot of cooperation. It has been amazing to see how many adapted, without complaint, to the ever changing environment.

For Getting There, things are changing too. Businesses are finding it hard to plan because the circumstances keep changing. Finding short term/part-time jobs is more difficult. Many of us were confined to our homes and did not even want to go out. One thing that has become clearer throughout all this, is that in order to get the most out of life, we need to feel included. We operate better when we are engaged.

Having a defined purpose makes our lives more meaningful.

My latest project is encouraging retired people to pick up their smart phone and learn to make short, 3 minute video clips on whatever subject they wish. A picture tells a 1000 words. I watched a 15 second film clip of a person I had never met and they were showing how easy it was to cut the grass with the mower. The mower was the old metal push type, which put the film clip back to the 50s. But in that 30 seconds, where there was no sound, the actual essence of the person was captured- the swagger, the confidence, the humour. The great dress sense.

So, get out that phone and experiment with making short films. Keep it clean. Keep it light. This is not the place for ranting or venting. I am going to make a few, myself, on interesting facts about Birr and Clareen.

There are lots of short clips on YouTube which show how to film, edit, add sound and upload.

This is the sort of activity where making mistakes is great because it helps us to learn. Summer is coming and outside in the daylight is the best option. If you have any tips to share, please send them to me
